The Last Brunch (June, 2013)

The Last Brunch: Background

This Last Brunch painting is a contemporary remake of DaVinci's The Last Supper which was created between 1495 and 1498 AD.

The original painting was cutting edge due to the identifiable emotions portrayed. It wasn't common to see people actually acting like real people.

In The Last Brunch it is important to notice natural poses with a splash of exaggerated/dramatic emotions.

The Last Supper depicts the seconds after Christ declares that one disciple will betray him before sunrise.

That's enough of the history: Here's what I was thinking

Brunch... In order to make it relevant today it's gotta be brunch instead of dinner.

Brunch is hip and trendy. Supper is out. Nobody wants to hear bad news late at night. Plus, who would pass up Bloody Marys or Mimosas?

13 men were included in The Last Supper.
In The Last Brunch there are also 13 men. 12 of them are shown, the 13th is you. The two men on the far right of the painting are totally checking you out (go you!) For women viewers, please pretend to be a guy. (There is a very  small person in one of the windows as well.)

The 14th character is Mary of Magdala. Long story short, she was possibly Christ's biggest groupie and stayed with him through thick and thin. This is the outfit that she would probably wear to the bar with all of these apostles. Here she can be herself without being objectified by men. She was not included in The Last Supper yet has a huge role in the arts so clearly needed to be included in The Last Brunch.

In the original painting each character is side by side, yet in this remake everyone is spread out carrying on with everyday life. This shows the mindset of today: even though they might not be connected in proximity they are somehow still connected.

Each person shown has a name and story, yet I'll keep that to myself for now. I'd much rather let you create your own version.
